Jose "Chuck" Martin is in his first season as an assistant coach at St. John's.

Martin comes to the Red Storm after spending three seasons as an assistant coach at Drexel University.

Martin, who recruited nationally for the Dragons, was involved in all aspects of the Drexel University basketball program, including on-court work with the team's guards. The team reached the postseason in two of his three years in with Drexel. Martin played a major role in the development of point guard Eric Schmieder, an All-Colonial Athletic Association performer, and also helped recruit and develop Bashire Mason, who was named to the league's All-Rookie Team and was the Defensive Player of the Year, the first time a freshman won the award in the CAA.

Martin arrived in Philadelphia after working for Coach Bruiser Flint at Massachusetts during the 1999-2000 season, when the Minutemen advanced to the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament Championship Game. While at UMass, Martin worked with Monty Mack, the school's second all-time leading scorer, and was also an integral part in the development of Shannon Crooks, an all-rookie selection that season.

Martin started his college coaching career as an assistant coach at Manhattan College during the 1999-2000 season under Head Coach Bobby Gonzalez. Martin's responsibilities at Manhattan included recruiting, individual instruction and on-floor coaching. He was instrumental in recruiting two of New York City's best guards, all-conference player Mugsy Green, and 2004 NBA second round draft pick Luis Flores. Those two players helped lead the Jaspers to become one of the top mid-major programs in the country over the last two years, including a first-round NCAA Tournament win over nationally-ranked Florida in 2004.

Before he started his career in college coaching, Martin established strong relationships on the East coast with high school and AAU coaches as the camp director for the Eastern Invitational Basketball Camp. Martin recruited some of the top student-athletes in the nation to attend one of the elite summer camps in the country. Some of the players who attended the camp included current Philadelphia 76er Samuel Dalembert, former Virginia standout Majestic Mapp and Greg Morton of Seton Hall.

The Bronx, NY, native has close ties to the New York City basketball community, working as as an assistant coach at national-powers St. Raymond's and LaSalle Academy. Martin was an assistant at LaSalle from 1993-95, when he worked with former St. John's standout Ron Artest, as well as future NBA player Shamgod Wells. While coaching at St. Ray's, Martin tutored former NBA center Ernest Brown, UMass standout Kitwana Rhymer and Mapp.

Martin, who played at St. Raymond's for three years, was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 1998.

Martin attended Champlain (Vt.) Junior College where he captained a pair of NJCAA tournament teams, before completing his career at Monmouth University. At Monmouth, Martin played the point guard position and averaged 7.1 points and 2.0 assists over his career.

Martin is a 1993 graduate of Monmouth with a degree in communications.

He has two children, a seven-year old daughter, Ashley-Monet Martin, and a two-year old son, Jordan. Martin lives in the Bronx with his wife, Lee.
